Newhall Coffee Company – Mitch McMullen came onto the radio show today and spoke about a lot of topics. The biggest take away I can state has to do with “shopping local”.

Local Businesses drive the local Santa Clarita Economy. Which Newhall Coffee is a Local Business.

Mitch brought out a memory in me working South Traffic Division with the LAPD. My partner and I used to stop by a coffee shop close to Santa Monica and the 405 Freeway. They read poetry, they had jazz and blues – it was more than being “about the coffee”. It was a wonderful experience. They actually had hand made Ceramic Cups and Coasters!!!

Have you been watching the local Santa Clarita elections? What about all of the “crap slinging”? We have offered to speak with any of the candidates on our Radio Show via Blog Talk Radio, but nothing as of yet.

I will tell you that my “in box” has been found by many an electorate and those are not limited to the Santa Clarita Valley

I know, we are not Big Time, but we are fun and our backgrounds make for interesting conversation.

What if there were to be a Free Santa Clarita Boot camp and Exercise Group?

How would it work? Maybe at 0500hrs (that’s 5am ), this group could meet at a nearby park. Then a person, that has no certifications, nor is licensed in any fitness realm, one that is not a nutritionist, and one that has been struggling with weight loss and weight gain, would start a coordinated Group Workout.

Using their past experiences with the Law Enforcement methods of “academy” weight loss, using the skills learned from the various Combat Scale conditioning programs and the newest movement that TV has to offer.

But wait… If one of the attendee’s has a great core and strength building movement, one that will leave the group winded, having them demonstrate in front of the group… So we all become stronger from the sharing… Nothing fancy, no logos, no forms, no registration, just getting in shape for the common good.

I don’t remember having music to run to or when doing calisthenics in Elysian Park so many years ago – but I was in the best shape of my life. But I do remember the Drill Instructor – he keep the motivation at a very high level.

What do you think. It would almost be like “Friends working out together”. Like a running club that is not as hard on your joints.

We could do wind sprints – with calisthenics in between… We could chase each other in the Sand of the “kids play area”, remember this will take place at 5am…

There would be a different level of accountability. Remember that spooky movie so many years ago. There was a guy that hired a company to help him quit smoking. The company would go to any length to keep this person from smoking. They even went to the extent of cutting off a joint from his pinky finger. That’s too much accountability

But phone numbers could be exchanged and we could make sure the person, who is in Abstentia, will be coming back. (only if the person wants too of course)

Could it work? Would Santa Clarita residents be interested?

It feels a bit strange asking, but I think it might be something worth setting up. Nothing too complicated. Just a bunch of people interested in becoming more fit, exchanging ideas at 0500am at a nearby park, while they crab walk and bear crawl their way to fitness.

Have you ever bear crawled in wet grass for 300 yards? It is quite intense….

BYOB – Not Beer, but Balls(medicine type), get some of those “contractor gloves” at Home Depot or Lowes so when you crawl around you don’t get too many “owies” on your hands. Maybe bring a set of dumbells or kettle bells to give you added resistance. You could even bring a yoga pad to keep your bum off of the wet grass. They water at night in the SCV

I’m not big on the partner stuff. Like throwing medicine balls back and forth – I think those things are best left out of a serious training program. Mainly due to your partner potentially not being as coordinated or in the same shape – things can go wrong quick.

We could even have a jump rope day where we have our exercises i mplemented with HIIT training doing 30 seconds of jump roping, then some calisthenic type movement – doing 12-20 sets…

We could even cover the “how too’s” of Bridging – not for the faint of heart. Not taught, because no one is an instructor at this class, just friends exchanging fitness ideas and working out together…

What do you think? When do we start? Maybe it will be best to just show up at 0500am at a specific location, post that here and comment back with updates about the program and the gains we have made in the form of losses.

B list – something that looks like it has been quickly repaired.

GFI, safety, installation of light plugs and fixtures, any illegal wiring, in the attck, in the crawl space.

FHA, requires flooring. Sub floors. Covered with something, health and safety, stained concrete floors, approved. Sub floor, Safety and Health, Buyer, visitor.

Dependent upon the Lender, it will make a big issue. FHA to the letter, 150 pages, we broke it down on a one page check list. <— FHA versus VA. VA have more requirements for the amenities - all of the appliances need to be installed. VA need a range in the kitchen. All appliances, all fully functional and working.

Seller – Hiring a company such as ours – look to provide only the services they are required. All of the current codes. Every Six months.

Get Licensed workers, contractors, etc. Lead Based Paint, called to testify, Realtor’s handyman that did the touch up paint.

Warranty all repairs for 1 year. $1000 or 10%, which ever is less.

Could seek a 20-30% down payment, if an investor.

Hiring a Contractor. Look at the contractor licensing board – California. Fully insured, workers compensation. Works on the property, employee, works compensation, if any issues arise, the workers can come after you.

It’s a relationship, all as consumers – change our minds, based on every day goes, have a good relationship with. Questions, how well he does his work. Communication, first and foremost, does he listen, does he answer your questions?

Start Negotiating, how you want the job to be completed, based on your desires, needs, wants and budget.

Local Santa Clarita Business Groups fail

This post came out of a phone call I received this last Thursday. A new arrival to the Santa Clarita Valley, who is opening up a new clothing business, had been approached by several of the networking groups that operate in the SCV.

Go with your NOSE…

Apparently “Dan”, was ok with some and really bothered by others. The “others” seemed, to “Dan”, to only be interested in when they were going to get paid and he totally smelled “BS” emitting from those “salespeople’s” chosen verbiage.

I totally get that and to have to pay first, before you experience anything, is an issue in today’s open business world.

Who do you SEO with in the Santa Clarita Valley?

The question of the day comes as a result of a phone conversation from a new local Santa Clarita Website, SEO(search engine optimization) and Social Media Marketing company. We spoke at length about my Radio Show and them coming on to talk to the SCVmoves audience.

There were several things I wanted to know about their business.

How long have they been around?

Where did they come from?

Where do they see themselves in 5 years?

Do they have local businesses that would be willing to come onto the radio show and say something about the service they provided or how they liked their job?

Brick and Mortar or Virtual?

How about a local address just in case things go awry? – my favorite

Previously on the SCV Radio Show

We have had SEO, Internet Optimizers and those that call the Social Media and the Web their home, on our SCVmoves radio show in the past. There are several new “non brick and mortar” Businesses that have come about recently and are competing with each other for your business.

If it sounds funny to your ears – it probably is

Some might throw phrases around like web 2.0, pay per click, ad words, keywords, organic rankings and more.

Don’t get overwhelmed – they should be able explain those terms in a simple, “non-techy” way. If they never get around to making sense – then interview the batter on deck.

Where is the “pay off”

Within a pre-determined time frame, you should also be able to “quantify” the exposure they have built for your business in their “on-line” way. This will be by “registrants” to your email updates about your business. Another proof will be in direct “new” business as a result of your better web placement.

Ask them, what can I expect and when can I expect it
